This verse throws a rhetorical curveball: God is saying that if the fundamental, unbreakable covenants with David and the Levitical priests can be broken, then these other promises might fail. It highlights the absolute certainty of God's promises to David and the priests, pointing to their ultimate fulfillment in Christ.
then also my covenant with David my servant may be broken, so that he shall not have a son to reign on his throne, and my covenant with the Levitical priests my ministers. As the host of heaven cannot be numbered and the sands of the sea cannot be measured, so I will multiply the offspring of David my servant, and the Levitical priests who minister to me.”
English Standard Version (ESV)
God is reassuring Jeremiah that His promises of restoration and a future king are unbreakable, just like the daily cycles of day and night. He emphasizes that these promises are as certain as the ongoing existence of the Davidic dynasty and the Levitical priesthood, so much so that if those were broken, then His other promises might be too. The text is asserting the immutability of God's covenant faithfulness, even in light of the people's sin and impending exile.
Have you ever felt like promises are easily broken? God's Word assures us that His covenants are different.
Jeremiah 33:21 uses a powerful rhetorical device. The prophet asks, 'Then may also my covenant be broken with David my servant... and with the Levitical priests...'
This isn't a real possibility! It's like saying, 'The sun might not rise tomorrow.' It highlights the absolute certainty of God's promises. The covenant with David ensured a lasting dynasty, and the covenant with the Levites guaranteed a priestly line. These were not just earthly arrangements; they pointed to something greater and eternal.
The promise of a king on David's throne seemed fragile. How did God ensure it would last forever?
God's covenant with David in 2 Samuel 7 promised that his descendants would rule perpetually. Jeremiah 33:21 directly references this, understanding that a future king would always sit on David's throne.
While earthly kings like those in Jeremiah's time often failed, and their reigns were temporary, this covenant ultimately pointed to Jesus Christ. He is the Son of David, the King whose reign is eternal and whose kingdom will never end. The 'son to reign' wasn't just a literal biological son, but the ultimate fulfillment found in the Messiah.
The service of the Levites was crucial, but it was tied to a specific earthly system. What was the deeper, lasting meaning?

The Levitical priests were God's appointed ministers, serving in the Tabernacle and later the Temple. Their lineage and service were governed by specific covenants. Jeremiah 33:21 acknowledges this covenant, linking it to David's royal line.
However, as the commentary notes, this promise finds its ultimate fulfillment not just in earthly priests, but in Jesus Christ. He is the perfect High Priest, whose sacrifice and mediation are eternal and infinitely more powerful than any Old Testament priest could offer. All believers, through Christ, also become part of a spiritual priesthood, offering 'spiritual sacrifices' (1 Peter 2:5).
