You have shown signs and wonders in the land of Egypt, and to this day in Israel and among all mankind, and have made a name for yourself, as at this day. You brought your people Israel out of the land of Egypt with signs and wonders, with a strong hand and outstretched arm, and with great terror.
English Standard Version (ESV)
Jeremiah is praying in despair over the impending destruction of Jerusalem, but he begins by recalling God's mighty acts in the past. He reminds God of His power demonstrated through the plagues in Egypt and the deliverance of Israel, which continue to be remembered and shape God's reputation. This ancient history is presented as proof that God's power and promises are still relevant, even amidst the present crisis.
How can past miracles still be relevant 'unto this day'?
Jeremiah is reminding God of His past faithfulness. He points to the signs and wonders God performed in Egypt and for Israel. The phrase 'even unto this day' isn't just about the physical continuation of miracles, but about their lasting impact and memory. These ancient acts weren't just events; they were foundational demonstrations of God's power and character that shaped His people's identity and reputation through history. Their effects and the stories told about them continued to be potent reminders of who God is.
Where is God's reputation established?
Jeremiah doesn't limit God's mighty acts to just Israel. He declares that God's 'signs and wonders' were evident 'in Israel, and among all mankind.' This broadens the scope of God's influence. It means God's power and actions weren't confined to one nation; they were observable and impacted the wider world, even pagan nations. This establishes God's universal sovereignty and power, making His name known not just to His chosen people but to all humanity through His deeds.
What does it mean for God to 'make a name' for Himself?
The ultimate purpose of these signs and wonders, Jeremiah states, is that God has 'made a name for yourself.' This isn't about God seeking validation like humans do. Instead, it's about His actions revealing His true character – His power, faithfulness, justice, and mercy – so that His unique identity is recognized and acknowledged. His 'name' represents His whole being and reputation. By performing these awe-inspiring deeds, God ensures that His glorious attributes are manifest and known, both in His ongoing actions and in the historical memory of His people and the world.
