This command to "build houses and plant gardens" isn't about settling in forever; it's a radical call to live life fully and with long-term hope, even in exile. It means embracing the present realities and trusting God to provide for their needs, rather than passively waiting for a premature rescue.
Build houses and live in them; plant gardens and eat their produce. Take wives and have sons and daughters; take wives for your sons, and give your daughters in marriage, that they may bear sons and daughters; multiply there, and do not decrease. But seek the welfare of the city where I have sent you into exile, and pray to the LORD on its behalf, for in its welfare you will find your welfare.
English Standard Version (ESV)
This verse comes amidst a letter Jeremiah sent to the Jewish exiles in Babylon. While false prophets were stirring up hope for a quick return, God’s message through Jeremiah was that they should prepare for a long stay, to build homes, plant gardens, marry, and have children, essentially settling down and living normal lives in exile for an extended period, around seventy years.
Imagine being told your temporary stay in a foreign land is actually your new normal. Jeremiah's message to the exiles in Babylon was a radical call to settle down, not pack up.
Jeremiah 29:5 is a stark contrast to the hopeful whispers of immediate return that some were hearing. The command to 'build houses and live in them' and 'plant gardens and eat their produce' wasn't about giving up hope, but about accepting the reality of a long exile.
What does it look like to live faithfully when the future is uncertain and your present is difficult? Jeremiah gave practical instructions that held a deeper theological truth.
The instructions in Jeremiah 29:5 were more than just advice on survival; they were a call to live out their faith within the framework God had ordained for their exile.
