The promise isn't just about a return; it's about God actively seeking and finding His people, revealing Himself to them after they felt hidden. This implies a profound reversal where God takes the initiative to be known and experienced again by those He had allowed to feel distant.
I will be found by you, declares the LORD, and I will restore your fortunes and gather you from all the nations and all the places where I have driven you, declares the LORD, and I will bring you back to the place from which I sent you into exile.
English Standard Version (ESV)
This verse comes right after Jeremiah delivered a message of judgment to the exiles in Babylon, telling them they would be there for a long time and should settle down. Here, however, God offers a powerful promise of future restoration, assuring them that He hasn't forgotten them, even in their distant and difficult situation. He pledges to be found by them, gather them from wherever they've been scattered, and bring them back to their homeland.
In the depths of exile, feeling abandoned was a constant fear. Yet, God's promise here isn't just about returning home; it's about finding Him again.
The Active Pursuit
The verse begins, 'I will be found by you.' This isn't a passive statement. It implies that God initiates this encounter. For the exiles, God had seemed hidden, His presence obscured by their sin and suffering. But this promise assures them that He will actively reveal Himself. It’s a response to their seeking, a demonstration that He doesn't abandon those who earnestly look for Him.
A Father's Face
Calvin highlights that 'I shall be found by you' contrasts with God 'hiding Himself' during exile. God’s manifestation isn't just about changing circumstances; it’s about His people perceiving His fatherly care again. When God makes His face shine upon us, it signifies His favor and renewed relationship, even when we feel far from Him.
Exile meant more than just being in a foreign land; it meant being scattered and dispersed. God’s promise addresses the deepest need: to be brought back together.
More Than Just Babylon
The promise extends beyond just returning from Babylon. Commentators note that 'all the nations and all the places where I have driven you' speaks to a much wider dispersion. Even if the main exilic community was in Babylon, individuals and smaller groups could have ended up anywhere.

The Church as a Gathered People
This theme of gathering the scattered resonates throughout Scripture and, as Calvin points out, has a continuous fulfillment. God’s power isn't limited by the extent of dispersion. He sovereignly gathers His people, forming them into one body, even when their presence is seemingly obliterated. This points to the ultimate gathering of God’s people in Christ, bringing believers from every background into His eternal kingdom.
What does it mean to 'turn away captivity'? It's more than just ending a difficult period; it signifies a profound shift in well-being and divine favor.
A Shift in Fortune
The phrase 'turn away your captivity' (or 'restore your fortunes') isn't just about releasing prisoners. It signifies a reversal of their dire circumstances – their prosperity, their social standing, their very way of life. It’s about God actively intervening to bring about a positive change, moving them from a state of loss to one of abundance.
The Essence of Divine Blessing
This restoration is deeply tied to God's favor. When God turns away captivity, He is demonstrating His renewed commitment to His people. It means their land will flourish again, their community will be rebuilt, and His presence will be felt among them. It's a tangible sign that God's purposes for them are not thwarted by their exile but are being actively brought to completion.
