What does Jeremiah 25:20-26 mean?

The phrase "remnant of Ashdod" is a stark reminder that not all cities in this list faced total destruction, but rather severe weakening and devastation, hinting at past military conquests that left them vulnerable. and all the mixed tribes among them; all the kings of the land of Uz and all the kings of the land of the Philistines (Ashkelon, Gaza, Ekron, and the remnant of Ashdod); Edom, Moab, and the sons of Ammon; all the kings of Tyre, all the kings of Sidon, and the kings of the coastland across the sea; Dedan, Tema, Buz, and all who cut the corners of their hair; all the kings of Arabia and all the kings of the mixed tribes who dwell in the desert; all the kings of Zimri, all the kings of Elam, and all the kings of Media; all the kings of the north, far and near, one after another, and all the kingdoms of the world that are on the face of the earth. And after them the king of Babylon shall drink.

What Jeremiah 25:20-26 means

Jeremiah is listing the nations that will drink God's cup of wrath, with Jerusalem being the first to face judgment for her sins. This passage then expands to include surrounding lands like Egypt, Uz, and the Philistine cities of Ashkelon, Gaza, Ekron, and even the weakened remnant of Ashdod, signifying that God's judgment is far-reaching. The mention of a "remnant" in Ashdod hints at historical events, like a prolonged siege, that have already diminished its strength before this prophetic declaration.

The 'Mingled People' and Foreign Influence

Jeremiah lists 'all the mingled people' as recipients of God's judgment. Who were they, and why are they lumped in with established nations?

The phrase 'mingled people' likely refers to foreign groups living within or alongside established nations, often serving as mercenaries or auxiliaries. These weren't necessarily unified peoples but a collection of different ethnic groups present in regions like Egypt or on the borders of Judah.

Who were they?

Foreigners in Egypt: Some scholars suggest these were non-Egyptian groups settled in or near Egypt, perhaps captives or mercenaries.
Auxiliary Troops: Others point to foreign soldiers hired by rulers, like the Ionians and Carians mentioned by Herodotus serving Egyptian kings.
Frontier Tribes: The term could also describe nomadic or semi-nomadic tribes living on the edges of settled lands, intermingled with the local populations.

Their inclusion highlights that God's judgment extends beyond established kingdoms to encompass all those caught in the currents of international power and conflict, especially those who were not part of the covenant people but were influenced by or involved in the surrounding nations' affairs.
