Jeremiah 21:5-7

What does Jeremiah 21:5-7 mean?

This verse highlights a startling reversal: God's mighty power, once used for deliverance like the exodus from Egypt, is now turned against His people. The repetition of "anger," "fury," and "great wrath" isn't just about God being mad; it emphasizes that His opposition is not a fleeting emotion, but a deliberate, powerful judgment on their sin.

I myself will fight against you with outstretched hand and strong arm, in anger and in fury and in great wrath. And I will strike down the inhabitants of this city, both man and beast. They shall die of a great pestilence. Afterward, declares the LORD, I will give Zedekiah king of Judah and his servants and the people in this city who survive the pestilence, sword, and famine into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon and into the hand of their enemies, into the hand of those who seek their lives. He shall strike them down with the edge of the sword. He shall not pity them or spare them or have compassion.’

What Jeremiah 21:5-7 means

King Zedekiah, facing the Babylonian siege, has sent messengers to Jeremiah seeking a divine word of hope. However, the prophet is tasked with delivering a grim message: God Himself is about to turn from protector to adversary against Jerusalem. This isn't just about the invading army; it's about God's direct and formidable opposition, a reversal of the powerful acts He once performed for Israel.

God's Personal Intervention

When God's people rebel, it's not just human armies they face. The Almighty Himself steps onto the battlefield.

Jeremiah 21:5 declares, "I myself will fight against you." This is a powerful statement. It means God isn't just allowing the enemy to win; He is actively and personally directing the conflict against His own people, the Israelites.

An Active Adversary

The use of "I myself" emphasizes God's direct involvement. He is not a distant observer but the prime mover behind the coming judgment. This is a terrifying thought: for those who turn away from Him, God becomes their direct opponent.

The Imagery of Judgment

God uses vivid human imagery to convey the intensity of His wrath. What does 'outstretched hand and strong arm' truly mean in this context?

The phrases "outstretched hand" and "strong arm" are borrowed from descriptions of God's past mighty acts of deliverance, particularly the Exodus from Egypt. However, here they are repurposed to describe His judgment.

A Twisted Reflection

Instead of a hand reaching out to save, it's a hand coming down to strike. Instead of a strong arm to protect, it's a strong arm to crush. This imagery powerfully communicates that God's power, once a source of freedom for His people, is now wielded against them in His "anger, and in fury and in great wrath."
