Feeling let down by friends? Judah constantly looked to powerful nations for help, only to end up disappointed. Discover why leaning on the world always leads to shame.
Jeremiah calls out Judah's constant 'gadding about' to change their 'way' – their political and military strategy. Instead of trusting God, they were constantly shifting alliances, first with Assyria, then with Egypt.
Chasing Empty Promises
- Assyria's Failure: In the past, kings like Ahaz sought Assyrian help, but it only brought more trouble (2 Chronicles 28:20-21). They were 'ashamed' because Assyria didn't deliver on its promises and often exploited them.
- Egypt's Unreliability: Now, Judah was turning to Egypt. But Jeremiah warns them this alliance would also lead to shame. History shows Egypt often failed to provide the promised support when it was desperately needed, especially during sieges.
This constant 'changing of the way' was a spiritual symptom: Judah was trying to secure their future through human power and political maneuvering, rather than relying on the God who had brought them out of Egypt and into the Promised Land.
