The prophet Jeremiah opens with a rhetorical gut-punch: 'Is Israel a slave? Is he a homeborn servant?' Why does he ask such a question, and what does it reveal about Israel's identity in God's eyes?
Jeremiah isn't just asking if Israel has been captured. He's posing a question that highlights a shocking contradiction. Israel was God's son, His firstborn (Exodus 4:22), cherished and set apart. They weren't meant to be treated like a mere servant, let alone a slave born into bondage, who had little to no rights.
Yet, their current state is that of prey – something easily snatched and destroyed, without a protector. The question presses: how could God's own 'son' end up in such a vulnerable, undignified position? The answer, as Jeremiah will soon reveal, isn't that God failed to protect His son, but that the son chose to run away from His father's care.
