Jeremiah asks a startling question: Is Israel a slave? A son? Why then is this cherished 'son' treated like helpless prey?
Jeremiah opens with a rhetorical question that jolts Israel. He asks if they are merely servants, or worse, slaves born into bondage. This isn't just about their current suffering; it's about their identity.
A Chosen Identity
God called Israel His 'son,' His 'firstborn' (Exodus 4:22). This meant they were not just any people, but a beloved family member, destined for a unique inheritance and standing. Even slaves born into a household held a special, more protected status than purchased slaves. They were part of the family.
The Shock of Being 'Spoiled'
So, the prophet asks, if they are sons, why are they treated like prey? Why are they plundered, abused, and without a protector? The shock isn't just that they are suffering, but that they are suffering in a way that contradicts their God-given identity. Their ruin makes no sense if they are truly God's beloved sons.
