Jeremiah 11:3-5

What does Jeremiah 11:3-5 mean?

While it sounds like a simple warning, the "curse" here isn't just a generic threat; it's a direct echo of Deuteronomy, specifically the covenant renewal ceremonies. Jeremiah is essentially saying that their refusal to listen to him is equivalent to rejecting the very foundations of their relationship with God, a transgression that carries the weight of God's established judgment.

You shall say to them, Thus says the LORD, the God of Israel: Cursed be the man who does not hear the words of this covenant that I commanded your fathers when I brought them out of the land of Egypt, from the iron furnace, saying, Listen to my voice, and do all that I command you. So shall you be my people, and I will be your God, that I may confirm the oath that I swore to your fathers, to give them a land flowing with milk and honey, as at this day.” Then I answered, “So be it, LORD.”

English Standard Version (ESV)

What Jeremiah 11:3-5 means

Jeremiah is instructed to deliver a stark warning to the people of Judah and Jerusalem, reminding them of God's covenant established when He brought their ancestors out of Egypt. This message emphasizes the dire consequences of disobedience, directly referencing the curses laid out in Deuteronomy for those who fail to uphold the terms of God's agreement. The prophet, acting on God's behalf, declares a curse upon anyone who disregards the words of this foundational covenant, highlighting the people's unfaithfulness.

Hearing vs. Obeying the Covenant

The verse says 'cursed be the man who does not hear the words of this covenant.' But is hearing the same as obeying? Dive into what God truly expects.

It's easy to hear words without truly listening. In Jeremiah's day, the people of Judah were likely familiar with God's law and covenant, perhaps even hearing it read or spoken about. But this verse highlights a crucial distinction: the curse isn't for simply not hearing, but for not obeying.

Hearing can be passive – acknowledging words exist. Obeying is active – putting those words into practice, letting them shape your life.

God’s covenant wasn't just a set of rules to be known, but a living agreement to be followed. The consequences of disobedience were severe because it represented a rejection of God's authority and His gracious offer of relationship.

Echoes of Sinai: The Covenant's Foundation

Why does God immediately link this curse to the Exodus from Egypt? Explore the deep roots of this covenant and the profound grace it represents.

Jeremiah doesn't just bring a new message; he reminds the people of the covenant God made at Mount Sinai when He delivered them from Egypt. The phrase 'out of the land of Egypt, from the iron furnace' (Deuteronomy 4:20) is a stark reminder of their brutal slavery.

The Grace of the Exodus: God rescued them from the 'iron furnace' – a place of intense suffering and oppressive heat – not because they deserved it, but out of His faithfulness to His promises to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
