The warning, "lest I dismay you before them," isn't just about God punishing Jeremiah; it highlights a crucial connection between the prophet's courage and God's empowerment. If Jeremiah falters and fears man, God will withdraw His support, leaving him truly vulnerable to shame and breakdown before the very people he's meant to confront.
But you, dress yourself for work; arise, and say to them everything that I command you. Do not be dismayed by them, lest I dismay you before them. And I, behold, I make you this day a fortified city, an iron pillar, and bronze walls, against the whole land, against the kings of Judah, its officials, its priests, and the people of the land. They will fight against you, but they shall not prevail against you, for I am with you, declares the LORD, to deliver you.”
English Standard Version (ESV)
God has just shown Jeremiah visions of impending destruction and the source of that destruction, emphasizing that these judgments are a direct consequence of Judah's unfaithfulness. Now, God commands Jeremiah to rise up, prepare himself for the difficult task ahead, and boldly proclaim everything God has instructed him to say to the people, warning him not to be intimidated by their opposition.
God’s message often demands immediate, radical action. What does it mean to 'gird up your loins' for your own divine assignment?
The phrase 'gird up your loins' is a powerful metaphor from the ancient Near East. In a culture where people wore long robes, preparing for any serious task—like a journey, urgent work, or even a fight—meant tucking these robes into a belt. It was a practical way to free oneself for action, to move swiftly and without hindrance.
For Jeremiah, God used this image to say: 'Get ready. Stop hesitating. This mission is urgent and requires your full engagement.' It’s not just about physical readiness, but also about mental and spiritual preparation to face the difficult task ahead. God wasn't asking him to prepare for a casual chat, but for a demanding, potentially dangerous assignment that required complete commitment.
God knows our tendency to fear. His command, 'Do not be dismayed,' is paired with a stark warning. What’s the connection?
God’s instructions to Jeremiah are a blend of empowerment and warning. He’s told to speak everything God commands, and crucially, 'Do not be dismayed at their faces.' The 'faces' here represent the people’s opposition, their judging stares, their potential rejection.
The second part of the warning, 'lest I dismay you before them,' is a profound reflection of God’s serious intent. The same Hebrew word is used for 'dismayed' and 'confound,' literally meaning to be broken or shattered. God isn’t threatening to inflict fear out of spite. Rather, He’s showing the severe consequence of ignoring His command: if Jeremiah fears people more than God, God might permit him to be overwhelmed by that very opposition. It’s a call to trust God’s strength above human intimidation, ensuring that the prophet’s fear of God overrides any fear of people.
