The original Greek words for "envy" and "strife" here actually point to a more active, insidious kind of "bitter zeal" and "party spirit." This isn't just passive jealousy; it's a driving force that can lead people to claim wisdom they don't possess, effectively lying against the very truth they claim to uphold.
But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast and be false to the truth. This is not the wisdom that comes down from above, but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic. For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there will be disorder and every vile practice.
English Standard Version (ESV)
James is directly addressing those in his audience who boast about their wisdom but are actually driven by "bitter jealousy and selfish ambition." This isn't just about minor disagreements; it's about a deeply ingrained, destructive spirit that corrupts any claim to true understanding or insight. Therefore, James confronts them, warning that such internal turmoil makes their boasting a lie and a betrayal of genuine truth.
What does James mean by 'bitter jealousy and selfish ambition'? It's not just a bad mood, but a destructive force that undermines true wisdom.
James uses strong language here, calling this inner turmoil 'bitter jealousy' (ζῆλος πικρός) and 'selfish ambition' (ἐριθεία).
When these two forces—bitter jealousy and selfish ambition—dominate our hearts, James says we are disqualified from boasting about our wisdom.
If our hearts are full of bitterness and ambition, James says boasting is not just inappropriate—it's a lie against God's truth.
James makes a critical connection: harboring bitter jealousy and selfish ambition invalidates any claim to wisdom and actively works against the truth.
