This verse highlights that sin isn't just about individual acts, but about a failure to uphold God's entire authority. The point isn't that a person who breaks one law is as guilty as someone who breaks them all, but that any single transgression reveals a heart that hasn't truly embraced the entirety of God's commands and His rule.
For whoever keeps the whole law but fails in one point has become guilty of all of it. For he who said, “Do not commit adultery,” also said, “Do not murder.” If you do not commit adultery but do murder, you have become a transgressor of the law.
English Standard Version (ESV)
James is challenging the idea of showing favoritism, arguing that it directly contradicts the royal law of love for neighbor. He demonstrates that if someone claims to follow all of God's commands but fails in even one area, like showing partiality, they've essentially broken the entire law because it all stems from God's authority and requires total commitment.
Think of the law like a chain. What happens when just one link breaks? James says it's not just that one link that's the problem, but the entire chain is compromised.
James uses a powerful analogy: the law is like a single, complete unit. It's not a buffet where you pick and choose what you like. If you break one part of it, you've essentially broken the entire system of God's commands. This isn't about how many laws you break, but about breaking the authority of the Lawgiver. When you disregard one command, you disregard the one who gave all the commands. It shows a fundamental lack of wholehearted obedience.
James declares that failing in one point makes you guilty of all. This sounds harsh, but what does it really mean for our standing before God?
This isn't saying you're punished equally for every sin as if you committed them all. Instead, it means that by breaking any single law, you fall short of the perfect standard required by God's law. You become a lawbreaker in God's eyes, unable to claim perfect obedience. The law demands 100% adherence. Any failure, no matter how small or how infrequent, means you haven't met that demand. You are guilty of violating God's overarching authority.

(10) For whosoever shall keep . . . —Better, have kept the whole Law, but shall have offended in one, has become guilty of all. As a chain is snapped by failure of the weakest link, so the whole Law, in its harmony and completeness as beheld by God, is broken by one offence of one man; and the penalty falls, of its own natural weight and incidence, on the culprit.

For whosoever shall keep the whole law - All except the single point referred to. The apostle does not say that this in fact ever did occur, but he says that if it should, and yet a man should have failed in only one particular, he must be judged to be guilty. The case supposed seems to be that of one who claimed that he had kept the whole law. The apostle says that even if this should be adm…
