James highlights that "God himself tempts no one," strongly emphasizing that the source of sin is never God. This isn't just a denial, but a fundamental assertion that God exists entirely outside the sphere of evil, making Him incapable of either being enticed by it or inciting it in others.
Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am being tempted by God,” for God cannot be tempted with evil, and he himself tempts no one. But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire. Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death.
English Standard Version (ESV)
James has just spoken about enduring trials joyfully because they produce perseverance, but here he shifts to address a crucial distinction: the source of temptation. He cautions believers not to blame God when they are enticed into sin, because God himself is incapable of being tempted by evil and therefore never tempts anyone to do wrong. This guards against the dangerous idea that God is somehow the author of sin, even when trials are involved.
Ever felt like blaming someone else when you messed up? James tackles this head-on, cutting through excuses to find the true origin of sin.
James wants us to be clear: when we're tempted to do wrong, it's not God leading us astray. He explicitly states, 'God cannot be tempted with evil, and he himself tempts no one.'
Separating God's Role
This clears God’s character and places the responsibility for our choices squarely on us.
If God doesn't tempt us to sin, why does He allow difficulties that feel like temptations? James offers a profound reason rooted in spiritual growth.
James doesn't deny that we face trials. In fact, he sees them as valuable tools in God's hands. The key is understanding the behind what God permits.

Trials vs. Temptations
By distinguishing these, James shows that God allows tests not to make us sin, but to prove and perfect our faith, leading to maturity. Our response to these trials is where our character is truly revealed and refined.
Understand the original words
peirazō · Greek Verb
In a biblical context, it refers to the solicitation to evil, either through external pressure (trial) or internal inclination (desire). God is never the source of evil solicitation.
epithymia · Greek Noun
An intense, often sinful craving or longing for that which is forbidden or contrary to the will of God. It is the root of internal temptation and the catalyst for sinful actions.
hamartia · Greek Noun
To miss the mark of God's standard; an act of rebellion, transgression, or failure to love God and neighbor as commanded. It is both a state of corruption and an action that violates God's law.
thanatos · Greek Noun
The ultimate consequence of sin and the state of separation from God. It encompasses physical, spiritual, and eternal separation from the source of life.
This passage explains that God allows trials not to tempt us to sin, but to reveal our hearts and teach us dependence on Him, echoing James' point that God doesn't tempt with evil.
1 Corinthians 10:13This verse reassures believers that God is faithful and will not allow temptations beyond their ability to bear, and will always provide a way out, directly supporting James' assertion that God doesn't tempt with evil.
Hebrews 4:15It states that Jesus, our High Priest, was tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin. This highlights God's own Son as being able to face temptation without succumbing, reinforcing that God Himself is not tempted by or does not tempt with evil.
This passage from the Apocrypha directly addresses the idea of blaming God for sin, stating 'Say not thou, It is through the Lord that I fell away: for thou oughtest not to do the things that he hateth. Say not thou, He hath caused me to err: for he hath no need of the sinful man.' This strongly parallels James' argument against attributing temptation to God.

clarkeJames 1:13: "Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man:"
Let no man say - Lest the former sentiment should be misapplied, as the word temptation has two grand meanings, solicitation to sin, and trial from providential situation or circumstances, James, taking up the word in the former sense, after having used it in the latter, says: Let no man say, when he is tempted, (solicited to sin), I am tempted of God; for God…
