When sickness strikes, we usually seek healing. But what happens when the people facing God's 'striking' refuse to seek Him for help?
Isaiah 9:13 reveals a stubborn refusal to turn to God, even when He is the one bringing the hardship.
The Purpose of Pain
God's 'striking' isn't arbitrary. It's meant to be a corrective measure, a painful but necessary intervention to turn His people back to Himself. The commentators highlight that the design of the chastisement was to bring them to God (Barnes). When this purpose is thwarted, it signals a deeper problem.
A Vicious Cycle
Instead of recognizing God's hand and inquiring of Him, the people continued in their own ways. This willful ignorance and persistent turning away from the source of help creates a cycle of judgment and rebellion. They didn't seek the 'Lord of hosts'—the all-powerful commander of the heavenly armies—who alone could truly deliver them.
This isn't just about physical affliction; it speaks to any hardship, internal struggle, or difficult circumstance God allows in our lives. When we refuse to acknowledge His hand or seek His wisdom in these moments, we harden our hearts and deepen our spiritual malady.
