When King Ahaz was terrified by invading armies, he refused to ask God for a sign of help. Yet, God, in His grace, promised one anyway.
God's Unsolicited Grace
When Ahaz and his people were trembling before the looming threat of the Syrian and Israelite armies, Isaiah offered Ahaz a chance to ask for a sign from the Lord.
But Ahaz, fearing to 'tempt the Lord,' refused the offer. He preferred to rely on his own political maneuvering, even seeking help from the Assyrians, rather than trusting God's promise of deliverance.
Despite Ahaz's rejection, God, out of His own sovereign grace and faithfulness, declared, 'Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign.' This sign wasn't earned or requested by Ahaz, but freely given. It demonstrates that God's salvation isn't dependent on our faith or requests, but on His own initiative and love.
