The verse highlights that the "ships of Tarshish" are not just bringing people back, but also their "silver and gold." This points to a future where nations and their wealth are dedicated to God, not just returning exiles, but actively contributing to His glory. It suggests that God's restoration of His people will involve the world's resources being consecrated to Him.
For the coastlands shall hope for me, the ships of Tarshish first, to bring your children from afar, their silver and gold with them, for the name of the LORD your God, and for the Holy One of Israel, because he has made you beautiful.
English Standard Version (ESV)
This passage continues the prophetic vision of restored Israel, following the immediate preceding verses that describe dazzling splendor and abundant wealth flowing to Zion. It expands the scope to include distant maritime nations and sophisticated seafaring vessels, like those from Tarshish (a major trading port, possibly in Spain), bringing back exiled Israelites. This grand return is not just a geographical relocation but a spiritual pilgrimage, dedicated to the Name and glory of the Holy One of Israel, because He has restored and beautified His people.
Imagine vast oceans dotted with ships, not for conquest or trade, but for homecoming. This verse paints a picture of a world drawn to God.
Isaiah 60:9 reveals a future where nations and distant peoples are actively seeking God. The "isles" (far-off maritime regions) and especially the "ships of Tarshish" (representing the furthest reaches of global commerce) are depicted as eagerly waiting for God's salvation.
This isn't a passive waiting. These distant lands are instrumental in bringing God's people back, carrying them with their wealth. It's a stunning reversal: those who once might have been enemies or distant observers are now agents of restoration and carriers of precious resources, all drawn by God's glory revealed in His people.
What if the 'silver and gold' weren't just for personal gain, but for something much greater?
The verse explicitly states that the wealth (silver and gold) brought by these returning people is "for the name of the LORD your God, and for the Holy One of Israel." This is a powerful theological statement.
It means that the prosperity and resources of the nations are ultimately destined to serve God's purposes. When God's people are restored, they don't come back empty-handed; they bring with them the riches of the world, dedicated to His glory. This demonstrates that all resources, no matter where they originate, belong to God and are to be used to advance His kingdom and honor Him.
Ask a follow-up
Why would distant nations help restore God's people? The answer lies in a profound divine transformation.
The climactic reason given for this global restoration and wealth transfer is found in the final phrase: 'because he has made you beautiful.' God's action is the ultimate catalyst.
This 'beauty' isn't merely outward appearance; it refers to the glory, honor, and divine radiance that God bestows upon His people. When God glorifies Zion (His people), He makes them so attractive and radiant with His presence that the nations are drawn to them. Their restoration isn't just about returning home; it's about reflecting God's own splendor, becoming a beacon that attracts the world to Him.
