What might seem like a simple lament over the death of good people is actually a profound observation on human blindness. The verse highlights that when the righteous perish, it's not just a loss of individuals, but a disturbing sign that no one is paying attention to the spiritual sickness of the community, a sickness that God Himself sees as a prelude to judgment.
The righteous man perishes, and no one lays it to heart; devout men are taken away, while no one understands. For the righteous man is taken away from calamity; he enters into peace; they rest in their beds who walk in their uprightness.
English Standard Version (ESV)
The prophet is observing a deeply concerning spiritual decline in Judah, where corrupt leaders and a people steeped in idolatry and injustice are ignoring God's clear warnings. Amidst this spiritual decay, the truly righteous and merciful are being removed, either by death or other means, yet the community remains callously indifferent, failing to recognize these departures as signs of impending judgment and a loss to the nation.

LVII. (1) The righteous perisheth . . .—The words seem written as if in the anticipation or in the actual presence of Manasseh’s persecution of the true prophets.
