What does Isaiah 56:6-8 mean?

Notice that the verse emphasizes not just outward actions like keeping the Sabbath, but also inward devotion: "to love the name of the LORD" and to be His servants with purpose. This highlights that true belonging isn't about ritual alone, but a heart surrendered to God.

“And the foreigners who join themselves to the LORD, to minister to him, to love the name of the LORD, and to be his servants, everyone who keeps the Sabbath and does not profane it, and holds fast my covenant— these I will bring to my holy mountain, and make them joyful in my house of prayer; their burnt offerings and their sacrifices will be accepted on my altar; for my house shall be called a house of prayer for all peoples.” The Lord GOD, who gathers the outcasts of Israel, declares, “I will gather yet others to him besides those already gathered.”

English Standard Version (ESV)

What Isaiah 56:6-8 means

This passage continues the prophecy's theme of inclusivity, addressing the concerns of foreigners and eunuchs who might feel excluded from God's people. Isaiah emphasizes that genuine devotion, marked by serving God, loving His name, observing the Sabbath, and holding to His covenant, is what truly matters for acceptance, not ethnic or physical status. This sets the stage for God’s promise to bring such individuals into His house of prayer, making them joyful and accepting their offerings.

Joining God: A Matter of the Heart

The invitation to God's people isn't just for those born into it. But what does it truly mean to 'join' with the Lord?

Isaiah 56:6 highlights that God welcomes foreigners, those outside the covenant nation of Israel. But this isn't a casual joining. The verse specifies a deep commitment: 'to serve him, and to love the name of the LORD, and to be his servants.'

This isn't about outward ceremony alone, but a transformation of the heart.

Purposeful Commitment: 'Join themselves' implies an active, intentional decision to cleave to God, not by accident but by deliberate choice.
Love as Motivation: Service flows from a love for God's very being – 'to love the name of the LORD.' It's an internal affection that fuels outward action.
Identity as Servants: They are to 'be his servants,' signifying a complete dedication of their lives to His will and purposes.

Covenant Keepers: Sabbath and Loyalty

Beyond a simple profession of faith, what specific actions signal true belonging in God's covenant?

The verse doesn't stop at internal disposition; it points to tangible expressions of faith. For both native-born Israelites and these 'sons of the stranger,' true belonging is marked by adherence to God's covenant.
