What does it mean for God to give His 'praise to carved idols'? How does this differ from giving glory?
The verse culminates with a stark contrast: "nor my praise to carved idols." God's praise is the recognition and acclamation of His worth and actions. He will not allow this praise to be diverted from Himself.
The Empty Worship of Idols
Carved idols represent anything that we elevate to a place of worship or ultimate trust, taking it away from God. These can be physical objects, but also ideologies, accomplishments, or even people that we allow to receive the adoration, loyalty, and trust that are rightfully God's.
An Unacceptable Diversion
Giving praise to idols is like trying to divert a mighty river into a dry streambed – it's futile and ultimately damns the very purpose of the praise. God's praise is meant for Him, the source of all goodness and truth. To give it to lifeless idols is to commit a spiritual theft, stealing from God what He alone deserves.
