Isaiah 40:21-26

What does Isaiah 40:21-26 mean?

The prophet isn't just asking if people know about God, but rather if they've truly listened and understood the continuous, foundational revelation of His existence and power, both through tradition and the very structure of creation itself. It’s a powerful challenge, implying that their ignorance or disregard for Him is not due to a lack of evidence, but a deliberate turning away from what is self-evident.

Do you not know? Do you not hear? Has it not been told you from the beginning? Have you not understood from the foundations of the earth? It is he who sits above the circle of the earth, and its inhabitants are like grasshoppers; who stretches out the heavens like a curtain, and spreads them like a tent to dwell in; who brings princes to nothing, and makes the rulers of the earth as emptiness. Scarcely are they planted, scarcely sown, scarcely has their stem taken root in the earth, when he blows on them, and they wither, and the tempest carries them off like stubble. To whom then will you compare me, that I should be like him? says the Holy One. Lift up your eyes on high and see: who created these? He who brings out their host by number, calling them all by name; by the greatness of his might and because he is strong in power, not one is missing.

What Isaiah 40:21-26 means

These verses come right after Isaiah has mocked the futility of idol worship by describing how idols are made. He's now directly confronting the people (whether Jews or Gentiles) for their ignorance of the true God, asking if they haven't known, heard, or understood basic truths about the Creator from the very beginning of the world and its foundational creation. The context emphasizes that the existence and power of God are evident through creation itself and have been passed down through tradition, making any ignorance of Him inexcusable.

Unavoidable Knowledge: God's Revelation

Has God left us guessing about who He is? Isaiah says 'no!' This verse is a wake-up call, challenging us to recognize what should be obvious.

Isaiah isn't just asking rhetorical questions; he's pointing to two primary ways God makes Himself known:

Through Creation:

The very structure and existence of the earth ('foundations of the earth') scream of a powerful, intelligent Creator. It's like looking at a magnificent building and knowing someone must have designed and built it.
This is God's 'general revelation' – a message available to everyone, everywhere, all the time, simply by observing the world around us. As Romans 1:20 says, 'For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made.'

Through Tradition and Testimony:

'From the beginning' and 'told you' point to historical accounts, spoken words, and teachings passed down through generations. For Israel, this included the stories of creation, the Exodus, and God's covenants.
This is God's 'special revelation' – specific truth revealed through prophets, scriptures, and ultimately, Jesus Christ. It confirms and clarifies what creation hints at, providing a fuller picture of who God is and what He has done.
