This isn't just about a path; it's about a Divine escort. The verse promises that even those who are simple or lack worldly wisdom, described as "fools," won't go astray because God Himself will be walking with them on this Way of Holiness. It reassures us that the holiness required isn't about innate perfection, but about God's presence guiding and keeping us on His path.
And a highway shall be there, and it shall be called the Way of Holiness; the unclean shall not pass over it. It shall belong to those who walk on the way; even if they are fools, they shall not go astray. No lion shall be there, nor shall any ravenous beast come up on it; they shall not be found there, but the redeemed shall walk there.
English Standard Version (ESV)
This passage bursts forth from the previous descriptions of a transformed, life-filled wilderness. Following the vivid imagery of barren lands blooming, this verse paints a picture of a clear, safe pathway specifically for God's redeemed people, a holy road unlike any other. It emphasizes that this is not a road for just anyone, but one reserved for the pure, and incredibly, so direct and divinely guided that even the simple or "foolish" won't lose their way.
Imagine a desert, vast and impassable. Then, suddenly, a clear, raised road appears. This isn't just any path; it's a divine intervention for a specific journey.
Isaiah 35:8 paints a vivid picture of a newly constructed "highway" appearing in a desolate land. This isn't a natural path but a divinely prepared way, a "causeway" or "turnpike" made ready for travelers. The text suggests it’s more than just a physical road; it symbolizes a clear way to God's presence and blessings.
This "highway" is specifically called the "Way of Holiness." This name tells us two things:
This isn't a public road open to everyone. There are strict entry requirements, yet the journey is surprisingly safe, even for the most unlikely travelers.
The verse makes it clear that "the unclean shall not pass over it." This isn't about a physical barrier but a spiritual one. Those who are impure, living in sin and rebellion against God, will not be able to tread this holy path.
However, for those who are on the path—the "wayfaring men" and even "fools" (meaning the simple, unlearned, or those considered foolish by the world)—there's a promise of protection and guidance.

Several commentators suggest a crucial nuance here: the phrase "but it shall be for those" is better understood as "He shall be with them." This points to God Himself walking with His people on this way. This divine presence is what ensures that even those who might otherwise stumble, because of their simplicity or lack of wisdom, will not go astray.
