When life feels darkest, who is your guide? This verse promises that your Teacher won't hide.
The latter part of Isaiah 30:20 offers a powerful contrast and promise: 'yet your Teacher will not hide himself anymore, but your eyes shall see your Teacher.' While some scholars debate whether 'Teacher' refers to God Himself or to prophetic figures, the overwhelming sense is that of divine guidance becoming clear and accessible.
In times of 'bread of adversity' and 'water of affliction,' it's easy to feel abandoned. Our natural inclination is to feel like God is distant or has turned His back. However, this verse counters that idea. It suggests that even when circumstances are dire, the presence and guidance of God – our ultimate Teacher – will be made evident. It’s not that God was ever truly absent, but that our 'eyes shall see' Him more clearly, perhaps through His Word, His Spirit, or the community of faith.
