It's easy to focus on the unlearned person being unable to read, but this verse highlights the learned person's inability first. Even someone equipped with knowledge and skill cannot decipher God's message when it's "sealed"—not because of their lack of education, but because divine truth requires spiritual insight, not just intellectual capacity.
And the vision of all this has become to you like the words of a book that is sealed. When men give it to one who can read, saying, “Read this,” he says, “I cannot, for it is sealed.” And when they give the book to one who cannot read, saying, “Read this,” he says, “I cannot read.”

God has been speaking through Isaiah, revealing visions of judgment against Jerusalem and its people who outwardly follow God's laws but have hardened their hearts. Despite these clear prophecies and warnings, the people remain willfully blind and spiritually deaf to God's message.
Imagine receiving a profound message, a vital warning, or an incredible promise, but finding yourself completely unable to understand it. This was the reality for many in Isaiah's day.
The people of Judah were facing a crisis, and God had sent Isaiah with a crucial message – a "vision of all." Yet, for them, this divine revelation was like a sealed book.
Why Sealed?
Even when the message was presented by someone who could read, the explanation was simple: "I cannot, for it is sealed." Their learned ability to decipher letters was useless when the spiritual capacity to understand God's truth was absent.
It might seem like ignorance is simple. But what happens when both the educated and the everyday person are equally unable to grasp a crucial truth?
