The prophet's use of "Ariel," potentially meaning "hearth of God," emphasizes that this city, once God's sacred center, is now ironically destined to be surrounded by the dead bodies of its own people, becoming a grim altar to His justice. The command to "add year to year" and "let the feasts run their round" is a sarcastic jab, highlighting their hollow, formal religious practices that will offer no protection from the coming judgment.
Ah, Ariel, Ariel, the city where David encamped! Add year to year; let the feasts run their round. Yet I will distress Ariel, and there shall be moaning and lamentation, and she shall be to me like an Ariel. And I will encamp against you all around, and will besiege you with towers and I will raise siegeworks against you.
