This verse isn't just about God removing ignorance, but about Him abolishing the outward signs of deep sorrow and mourning that covered all of humanity. It points to a radical transformation where grief itself, symbolized by the covered face, is utterly removed by God's powerful intervention.
And he will swallow up on this mountain the covering that is cast over all peoples, the veil that is spread over all nations. He will swallow up death forever; and the Lord GOD will wipe away tears from all faces, and the reproach of his people he will take away from all the earth, for the LORD has spoken.
English Standard Version (ESV)
This passage follows Isaiah's vision of a grand feast hosted by God on Mount Zion for all nations. It directly follows the description of this glorious banquet, emphasizing that the joy of this feast is made possible because God will remove the spiritual blindness and sorrow that have shrouded humanity. This removal of a "veil" anticipates the subsequent verses, which speak of God swallowing up death and wiping away all tears.
Why would Isaiah compare spiritual blindness to a veil worn in grief? What does this image reveal about humanity's state before God's intervention?
In Isaiah 25:7, the prophet uses the imagery of a "covering" and a "veil" to describe the spiritual condition of all peoples. This imagery draws from ancient customs where covering the face or head was a sign of deep mourning, sorrow, or shame.
Twofold Meaning:
The commentators note this veil isn't just a symbol of sadness but also a profound lack of spiritual perception, hindering people from understanding God's ways.
What does it mean for God to 'swallow up' this veil? How does this act of divine intervention transform humanity's condition?
The climax of Isaiah 25:7 is God's decisive action: "he will swallow up" this covering and veil. This isn't a gentle lifting, but a powerful, complete eradication.
