The phrase "covering of Judah" isn't just about physical defenses; it refers to the protective presence of God that had been removed, leaving them vulnerable. When that covering is stripped away, their immediate reaction isn't to turn to God, but to the "house of the forest"—an armory filled with man-made weapons, highlighting a misplaced trust in human strength over divine protection.
He has taken away the covering of Judah. In that day you looked to the weapons of the House of the Forest, and you saw that the breaches of the city of David were many. You collected the waters of the lower pool, and you counted the houses of Jerusalem, and you broke down the houses to fortify the wall. You made a reservoir between the two walls for the water of the old pool. But you did not look to him who did it, or see him who planned it long ago.
English Standard Version (ESV)
As the Assyrian army under Sennacherib approaches, God's judgment is about to strip away Judah's defenses, exposing their vulnerability. In response to this impending invasion, the people frantically turn to their military might, specifically the armory within Jerusalem known as the "house of the forest of Lebanon," rather than seeking divine protection. This shows a deep-seated lack of faith, relying on human strength and resources in the face of God's power and judgment.
