In a world where spiritual gifts can feel fleeting, this verse promises something different for the coming King. What does it mean for the Spirit to 'rest' upon someone?
Isaiah 11:2 declares, "And the Spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him..." This isn't a temporary visitation but a permanent dwelling. Unlike the sporadic anointing of judges or prophets in the Old Testament, the Holy Spirit's presence with the Messiah is described as a lasting endowment. This signifies a fullness and stability of divine empowerment, ensuring that the Messiah is continuously equipped for His mission. This permanent presence guarantees His perfect fulfillment of God's purposes, offering a stark contrast to the transient nature of spiritual manifestations in many human experiences.
The verse lists pairs of qualities gifted by the Spirit. What do these specific descriptors reveal about the Messiah's character and mission?
Isaiah 11:2 enumerates six distinct qualities that flow from the Spirit's presence: wisdom, understanding, counsel, might, knowledge, and the fear of the LORD.
