Isaiah 10:26-27

The verse uses two past historical events – God’s deliverance of Israel from Midian and the destruction of the Egyptians in the Red Sea – not to describe how God will punish the enemy, but how He will strike them. This isn't just about a military defeat, but about God personally wielding a "scourge" and "rod" to bring about a devastating blow, mirroring His powerful acts of salvation in the past.
And the LORD of hosts will wield against them a whip, as when he struck Midian at the rock of Oreb. And his staff will be over the sea, and he will lift it as he did in Egypt. And in that day his burden will depart from your shoulder, and his yoke from your neck; and the yoke will be broken because of the fat.”
English Standard Version (ESV)
The prophet is addressing the powerful Assyrian empire, calling them "the rod of God's anger" for punishing Israel. However, this verse reveals that God will turn His hand against the Assyrians themselves, using devastating historical events from Israel's past as a warning and a promise of their future destruction. The Assyrians will face a divine retribution mirroring God's judgment on the Midianites and the Egyptians at the Red Sea.
Why does Isaiah remind us of ancient victories over Midian and Egypt when talking about future judgment? It’s not just about remembering the past; it’s about understanding God’s consistent character.
The prophet Isaiah uses two powerful historical events to illustrate God's judgment against the Assyrians: the defeat of Midian by Gideon and the destruction of the Egyptians in the Red Sea.
Echoes of Gideon's Victory
The Assyrian king saw himself as an unstoppable force, a tool of his own making. But Isaiah reveals a profound truth about who truly holds the power.
The Assyrian empire was a brutal force, a 'rod of God's anger' used to punish nations. However, the prophet Isaiah contrasts this with God's own 'rod,' demonstrating that true power and ultimate authority belong to the LORD of hosts.
