Why does God allow powerful nations to conquer others? This verse reveals a surprising answer: sometimes, He uses them as His tools.
The Rod of God's Anger
This verse, and the passage it's part of, speaks about the King of Assyria. But it's crucial to understand that the prophet Isaiah isn't just describing a historical event; he's revealing the heart behind such conquests. The Assyrian king, and empires like it, saw themselves as utterly self-made.
But God's perspective is different. He calls Assyria the 'rod of His anger' and the 'staff in their hand is His indignation.' This doesn't mean God endorses their cruelty or their arrogance. Instead, it means God can sovereignly use even wicked nations and their leaders to carry out His purposes, particularly in judging other nations for their own sin.
Think of it like a hammer. A hammer can be used by a builder to construct something beautiful, or it can be used by someone to destroy. God, in His ultimate wisdom, can use the 'hammer' of an empire to bring judgment, even when the empire itself is driven by pride and greed.
