And I will restore your judges as at the first, and your counselors as at the beginning. Afterward you shall be called the city of righteousness, the faithful city.” Zion shall be redeemed by justice, and those in her who repent, by righteousness.
English Standard Version (ESV)
After denouncing Judah's pervasive corruption, particularly among its leaders, God promises a future restoration. This verse specifically addresses the promise to replace the corrupt judges and counselors with righteous ones, reminiscent of the nation's early, pure leadership. This foundational change is presented as the catalyst for Jerusalem to finally earn its true identity: a city of justice and faithfulness.
The verse begins with a promise of restoration. But what kind of restoration? It points to a specific area where things went terribly wrong.
Isaiah's prophecy highlights a critical issue in Jerusalem: corrupt leadership. The Lord declares, 'I will restore your judges as at the first, and your counselors as at the beginning.' This wasn't just about filling positions; it was about re-establishing a standard of integrity.
What's in a name? For Jerusalem, a new name signifies a profound change, not just on paper, but in reality.
The verse culminates in a powerful declaration of transformation: 'Afterward you shall be called the city of righteousness, the faithful city.' This renaming is more than just a title; it’s a description of the city's new character and God's renewed relationship with it.
