You stretch out your hands, you multiply your prayers – but God turns away. What makes worship feel hollow?
The verse paints a stark picture: God’s response to the people's prayers is silence, a complete turning away. This isn't about a lack of piety in general, but about worship disconnected from a changed heart and life.
The Physical Act vs. the Inner Reality
- The 'spreading forth of hands' was a common posture of prayer, reaching out to God (as seen in Luke 18:11-13).
- 'Making many prayers' suggests a quantity, perhaps even a ritualistic or ostentatious display of devotion.
- However, God sees beyond the outward actions. He looks at the hands that are 'full of blood' – stained by violence, oppression, and injustice.
When our outward acts of worship – our prayers, our church attendance, our religious expressions – are not matched by a life of integrity and love for others, they become meaningless rituals in God’s eyes. It's like shouting into a void; the sound goes out, but no one is truly listening because the heart isn't aligned with the words.
