The verse highlights the utter futility of their actions by contrasting asking counsel of "wood" and a "staff" with the true source of guidance. This wasn't just about making idols; it pointed to a deeper, almost desperate reliance on inanimate objects for direction, a symptom of being so spiritually adrift that even a walking stick felt like a viable oracle.
My people inquire of a piece of wood, and their walking staff gives them oracles. For a spirit of whoredom has led them astray, and they have left their God to play the whore. They sacrifice on the tops of the mountains and burn offerings on the hills, under oak, poplar, and terebinth, because their shade is good. Therefore your daughters play the whore, and your brides commit adultery.
English Standard Version (ESV)
Hosea is confronting Israel with their deep-seated spiritual adultery. They've abandoned God, the true source of wisdom, and instead consult lifeless objects like carved wood and divining staffs for guidance. This misguided devotion is driven by a pervasive "spirit of whoredom" that has perverted their desires and led them to stray far from their covenant relationship with God.
Imagine seeking life-changing advice not from a trusted friend or wise mentor, but from… a piece of wood? Hosea paints a startling picture of spiritual confusion.
God's people are looking for answers, but they're asking the wrong sources.
What drives people away from the One who loves them most? Hosea points to a powerful, unseen force that distorts judgment and leads to ruin.
The verse identifies a specific spiritual dynamic at play – a 'spirit of whoredom.' This isn't just about literal sexual sin, though that was certainly part of Israel's problem. It's a spiritual condition.

ellicottHosea 4:12: "My people ask counsel at their stocks, and their staff declareth unto them: for the spirit of whoredoms hath caused them to err, and they have gone a whoring from under their God."
