Hosea 11:7-9

What does Hosea 11:7-9 mean?

The phrase "bent on turning away" uses a striking image – the people are not just occasionally straying, but are profoundly, almost physically, fastened to their rebellion against God. Even when prophets called them to the Most High, their hearts were so deeply set on sin that no one would lift themselves up to honor Him.

My people are bent on turning away from me, and though they call out to the Most High, he shall not raise them up at all. How can I give you up, O Ephraim? How can I hand you over, O Israel? How can I make you like Admah? How can I treat you like Zeboiim? My heart recoils within me; my compassion grows warm and tender. I will not execute my burning anger; I will not again destroy Ephraim; for I am God and not a man, the Holy One in your midst, and I will not come in wrath.

What Hosea 11:7-9 means

The prophet Hosea is speaking God's lament over Israel, describing their deep-seated tendency to turn away from Him. Despite being God's chosen people and having prophets who constantly called them back to the Most High, they remained stubbornly resistant, refusing to honor or return to Him. This verse explains why God's judgment is coming: not due to a sudden lapse, but a persistent, ingrained rebellion against their Creator.

The Deep Root of 'Bent to Backsliding'

What does it mean for a whole people to be 'bent' toward turning away from God? This isn't just a passing phase, but a deeply ingrained tendency.

The phrase 'bent to backsliding' (or 'hung to it') paints a powerful picture of a people whose very being is attached to turning away from God. It suggests an immovable adherence to sin, a fixed orientation away from Him.

An Inescapable Gravity

This isn't about occasional mistakes; it's a habitual, gravitational pull towards sin. Their entire existence, as a nation, seemed dependent on this rebellion. They were 'fixed and immovable in their adherence to their sin itself,' as one commentary puts it.

Moral Apathy

This deep-seated tendency results in moral apathy. Even when called upwards, their inclination is to remain fixed in their sin, unable to strive or desire to rise.

The Futility of Calling on God

Israel called out to God, yet the verse states He would not 'raise them up.' What does this reveal about the nature of prayer and God's response?

This verse presents a stark reality: the people of Israel, despite their outward cries to God, were not heard in a way that brought deliverance. This highlights a critical disconnect between calling on God and truly exalting Him.

Empty Words vs. Exaltation

'Though they call out to the Most High, he shall not raise them up at all.' This isn't about God being deaf; it's about the people's hearts being fixed on their sin. Calling on God while actively turning away from Him is like shouting into the wind – the words are there, but the intent is absent.
