God’s love for Ephraim was like patiently training a beloved calf, allowing it to do the easier, sweeter work of treading grain. But because they grew fat and insolent on this grace, God will now impose a much harsher yoke, making them serve others instead of themselves.
The prophet Hosea describes Ephraim's (the Northern Kingdom's) spiritual unfaithfulness by comparing them to a well-trained, indulged heifer that enjoys the easy work of threshing grain.
