The text emphasizes that death is a singular, appointed event for humanity, and crucially, that judgment immediately follows, leaving no room for further earthly chances or an opportunity to "try again" after death. This stark reality highlights the absolute finality of our choices and life's trajectory.
And just as it is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment, so Christ, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time, not to deal with sin but to save those who are eagerly waiting for him.
English Standard Version (ESV)
The author is drawing a powerful analogy between the ultimate destiny of humanity and the once-for-all work of Christ. Just as every person faces a single death followed by an inevitable judgment, Christ's sacrifice was also a singular, definitive event. This verse highlights the finality of both human life and Christ's atonement, setting the stage for the argument that Christ's unique offering needs no repetition.
Ever wondered why life feels so finite? This verse points to a universal, non-negotiable appointment.
The verse states plainly: 'it is appointed for man to die once.' This isn't a suggestion or a possibility; it's a divine appointment, a fixed point in human existence. Think of it like a scheduled event in God's calendar for every single person.
Death isn't the end of the story. What's the next inevitable chapter?
Immediately following the declaration about death, the verse pivots to its consequence: 'and after that comes judgment.' This isn't a maybe, or a possibility; it's the direct, appointed follow-up to our single encounter with death.

This foundational passage in Genesis highlights the curse brought on humanity by sin, stating 'By the sweat of your face you shall eat bread, till you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken; for dust you are, and to dust you shall return.' This directly connects death and the physical body's return to the earth as a consequence of humanity's fall, echoing the 'appointed' nature of death mentioned in Hebrews.
Ecclesiastes 9:5-6This passage describes the state of the dead: 'For the living know that they will die, but the dead know nothing, and they have no more reward, for the memory of them is forgotten. Their love and their hate and their envy have already perished, and forever they have no share in what is done under the sun.' This passage emphasizes the finality of death and the absence of further opportunity for action or reward, reinforcing the singular nature of life's appointment before judgment.
Matthew 25:31-46This parable of the sheep and the goats vividly portrays the final judgment where individuals are separated based on their actions towards others, particularly the needy. This passage directly links the resurrection with both life and judgment, reinforcing the Hebrews' theme that death is not the end, but a prelude to a divine reckoning.
Romans 8:18-25Paul describes creation groaning and eagerly awaiting its final redemption and the revealing of the sons of God, including the resurrection of our bodies. ellicottHebrews 9:27: "And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:"
(27) And as it is appointed . . . —More literally, And as there is laid up for men once to die, and after this judgment. Man’s life and works on earth end with death: what remains is the result of this life and these works, as determined by God’s “judgment.” Man does not return to die a second time. That some few have twice passed through death does not affect the general law. The emphatic word “once” and…
vincentHebrews 9:27: "And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:"
That there is no place for a repeated offering of Christ is further shown by reference to the lot of men in general. The very idea is absurd; for men die once, and judgment follows. Christ was man, and Christ died. He will not come to earth to live and die again. Christ died, but judgment did not follow in his case. On the contrary, he became judge of all.It is appointed (ἀπόκειται)Lit. is laid by in sto…
