Hebrews 7:1-3

What does Hebrews 7:1-3 mean?

The most striking thing here isn't just that Melchizedek was a king and priest, but that his name itself means "King of Righteousness" and he ruled in "Salem," a name associated with peace. This combination of titles and place names, revealed immediately, isn't accidental; it's the author’s first clue to Melchizedek's profound significance for Christ.

For this Melchizedek, king of Salem, priest of the Most High God, met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings and blessed him, and to him Abraham apportioned a tenth part of everything. He is first, by translation of his name, king of righteousness, and then he is also king of Salem, that is, king of peace. He is without father or mother or genealogy, having neither beginning of days nor end of life, but resembling the Son of God he continues a priest forever.

What Hebrews 7:1-3 means

The author of Hebrews is building an argument for the superiority of Christ's priesthood over the Levitical system, referencing Psalm 110:4. To do this, he introduces Melchizedek, a mysterious figure from Genesis 14 who was both king and priest, meeting Abraham after a military victory and blessing him. This encounter is presented not just as a historical event, but as a foundational moment that highlights Melchizedek's unique status before Abraham, the patriarch from whom the entire Levitical priesthood would eventually descend.

A King and Priest Appears

Imagine Abraham, fresh from a hard-won victory, returning home. Suddenly, a mysterious figure emerges – a king and a priest, meeting him on the road. Who was this remarkable man?

The book of Hebrews introduces Melchizedek, a figure who is both a king and a priest. This dual role is significant because, in the Old Testament, these offices were typically separate. Abraham, the patriarch and ancestor of an entire nation, meets Melchizedek, king of Salem (likely Jerusalem), and priest of the Most High God. This encounter, recorded in Genesis, sets the stage for understanding Jesus' unique priesthood. Melchizedek's very existence as a priest-king before the established Levitical system highlights that God's work wasn't limited to what would later become the law.

Names Revealing Divine Purpose

Sometimes, a name tells a whole story. Melchizedek's name, and the name of his city, weren't just labels – they were profound declarations.

The name 'Melchizedek' itself is a powerful clue. It comes from Hebrew words meaning 'king of righteousness.' And he was king of 'Salem,' a name associated with peace. So, we have a 'king of righteousness' and 'king of peace.' The author of Hebrews emphasizes this because these are key attributes of the Messiah. Jesus, the ultimate King and Prince of Peace, perfectly embodies these names. This isn't a coincidence; it's a deliberate connection highlighting how this ancient figure foreshadowed Christ's perfect reign and atoning work.
