What's striking here is that God interposed Himself with an oath. He didn't just swear; He stepped in between Himself as the Promiser and us as heirs, acting as a divine Mediator to guarantee His own promise, demonstrating an incredible, layered commitment to His unchanging purpose. This wasn't just about showing He's faithful, but about how deeply He's invested in assuring us of His unchangeable character for our sake.
So when God desired to show more convincingly to the heirs of the promise the unchangeable character of his purpose, he guaranteed it with an oath, so that by two unchangeable things, in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have fled for refuge might have strong encouragement to hold fast to the hope set before us. English Standard Version (ESV)
The author is urging readers not to drift away from the core message of Christ, reminding them of the serious consequences if they do. He pauses his direct exhortation to explain the trustworthiness of God's promises, citing God's oath to Abraham as a profound example of divine commitment and immutability. This explanation sets the stage for the author's confidence in God's faithfulness, which he will further elaborate on in the following verses by referencing Jesus' own priestly role.
Why would God, the all-powerful Creator, need to swear an oath? It wasn't for His benefit, but for ours.
The text tells us God swore to show the 'unchangeable character of His purpose' to the 'heirs of the promise.' Think about human plans – they often shift based on circumstances, emotions, or new information. God’s plans, however, are eternal and perfect.
