Have you ever felt like you needed extra reassurance? Imagine God Himself stepping in to guarantee His promises.
When God made a promise to Abraham, He encountered a unique situation. He wanted to offer Abraham the highest possible assurance.
The Human Need for Oaths
In human interactions, when we swear an oath, we often appeal to something or someone greater than ourselves to guarantee our word. This is because we are fallible and can be untrustworthy.
God's Self-Sufficiency
But God is perfect. There is no one greater than Him. So, to give Abraham the ultimate guarantee, God didn't appeal to a higher power – because none exists! Instead, He swore by Himself. This act demonstrates the absolute certainty and immutability of His promises. It's God Himself, in His perfect being, who stands behind His Word.
