The verse highlights that a high priest is "taken from among men," emphasizing his human origin and shared experience with those he serves. This isn't just a footnote; it's crucial because it establishes the priest's qualification to represent humanity's struggles and needs before God.
For every high priest chosen from among men is appointed to act on behalf of men in relation to God, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins. He can deal gently with the ignorant and wayward, since he himself is beset with weakness. Because of this he is obligated to offer sacrifice for his own sins just as he does for those of the people. And no one takes this honor for himself, but only when called by God, just as Aaron was.
English Standard Version (ESV)
The author is beginning a detailed explanation of Jesus' superior priesthood by first describing the role and limitations of the Old Testament high priests. These earthly priests, chosen from among men, served as intermediaries to offer prescribed gifts and sacrifices to God on behalf of the people, particularly for their sins. This setup highlights the need for a more perfect mediator, which the author will soon reveal to be Christ.
Imagine needing someone to speak for you to a king. Who would you choose? Someone completely removed, or someone who understands your struggles?
Hebrews 5:1 introduces the high priest as someone 'taken from among men.' This isn't just a detail; it's foundational. The Levitical high priests, though divinely appointed, shared our human condition. This meant they could approach God for people because they were people. They understood the frailties, the temptations, and the consequences of sin that plagued the very individuals they represented.
This human connection was vital. It allowed them to bridge the gap between a holy God and a sinful humanity. Their humanity wasn't a disqualifier but a crucial qualification, enabling them to act 'on behalf of men in relation to God.'
The verse mentions 'gifts and sacrifices for sins.' What's the difference, and why does it matter that the high priest handled both?
Hebrews 5:1 speaks of the high priest offering 'both gifts and sacrifices for sins.' While often used interchangeably in common speech, these terms had distinct meanings in the Old Testament sacrificial system.

It wasn't just about dealing with sin; it was also about maintaining a relationship with God marked by thanksgiving and devotion. The high priest, acting on behalf of the people, managed the full spectrum of prescribed worship, aiming to restore and maintain their connection with God.
