What is this 'propitiation' Jesus accomplishes, and why is it so vital?
The ultimate purpose of Jesus's humanity and His priestly ministry is to 'make propitiation for the sins of the people.' This is a profound concept, referring to the act of appeasing God's righteous judgment against sin through a sacrificial offering.
Jesus, as our High Priest, offered Himself as the perfect sacrifice. His death wasn't just a demonstration of love; it was a divine transaction that satisfied God's justice, thereby reconciling us to Him. This act covers our sins, turning away God's rightful wrath and opening the way for forgiveness and relationship.
It's important to understand that God Himself initiated this propitiation (Romans 3:25), foreordaining it as the means by which His justice and love could both be fully expressed.
