The urgency to "pay much closer attention" isn't just about remembering teachings; it's about actively holding onto them, lest we "drift away." This isn't a sudden fall, but a gradual, almost passive movement away from the truth, like a boat losing its anchor and being carried by the current.
Therefore we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, lest we drift away from it. For since the message declared by angels proved to be reliable, and every transgression or disobedience received a just retribution, how shall we escape if we neglect such a great salvation? It was declared at first by the Lord, and it was attested to us by those who heard,
English Standard Version (ESV)
The author has just spent chapter one demonstrating the absolute superiority of Jesus Christ over the angels, showing He is God's ultimate revelation. Now, the writer urges believers to pay close attention to the gospel message they've heard, a message delivered by such a supreme Son, lest they neglect it and drift away from salvation. This foundational truth about Christ's identity is the bedrock for the subsequent exhortation to persevere in faith.
The writer of Hebrews isn't just asking you to listen; he's demanding a higher level of engagement. Why such intensity?
The reason for 'more earnest heed' is found in the unparalleled superiority of Jesus. In chapter 1, the author meticulously lays out how Christ is greater than the angels – He is God's Son, the Creator, the sustainer of all things.
Because the message we've received comes through this supremely elevated Person, our response must be equally elevated. It's not just about hearing words; it's about responding to the very revelation of God through His Son. This isn't a casual conversation; it's a divine address demanding our utmost attention and reverence.
We're warned about 'drifting away.' What does this subtle but dangerous movement look like in our faith?
The Greek word translated 'drift away' (pararrruōmen) paints a vivid picture. It's not about a sudden, dramatic fall or a conscious act of rebellion. Instead, it suggests a slow, passive sliding – like a boat losing its anchor and being carried by the current.
This kind of spiritual drift often happens through neglect and inattention, not necessarily through outright defiance. It's when the truths of the gospel, which we once held firmly, gradually slip from our grasp because we're not actively holding onto them. It's the danger of letting life's currents pull us away from the solid ground of God's Word.
