Hebrews 12:15-16
This page isn't yet indexed by search engines.
The verse warns against a "root of bitterness," but it's not just about personal grumbling; it highlights how one person's festering discontent can poison the entire community, "defiling" many through their influence. This implies that bitterness isn't just a private struggle but a contagious force that threatens the spiritual health of the whole church.
See to it that no one fails to obtain the grace of God; that no “root of bitterness” springs up and causes trouble, and by it many become defiled; that no one is sexually immoral or unholy like Esau, who sold his birthright for a single meal.
English Standard Version (ESV)
The author is urging the Hebrew Christians to pursue holiness and live in peace, warning them against spiritual apathy and the danger of falling away from their faith. This verse serves as a crucial reminder that the spiritual health of the community is interconnected, and the presence of even one bitter, unrepentant person can poison the whole group and lead many astray.
The Bible doesn't just tell us to receive grace; it calls us to actively pursue it. What does it mean to 'fail of the grace of God,' and how do we avoid it?
The phrase 'fail of the grace of God' (or 'fall short of' / 'fall back from') doesn't necessarily mean losing salvation that was once held. Instead, it speaks to a dangerous deficiency or a turning away from God's enabling power and truth. It's about not attaining what God offers or actively distancing oneself from it.
Why Diligence Matters
What exactly is this 'root of bitterness,' and how can something so small grow to defile so many?
The 'root of bitterness' is a powerful metaphor drawn from the Old Testament (Deuteronomy 29:18). It signifies something deeply embedded, often hidden at first, that produces a corrupting influence.
