Our earthly parents did their best, but their discipline often missed the mark. Why was that, and how does it help us understand God’s correction?
The author of Hebrews points out that the discipline from our earthly fathers, while necessary, had limitations.
- Brief Duration: The phrase "for a few days" highlights that parental correction was largely confined to childhood and youth. It was a temporary season, not an eternal process.
- Subjective Judgment: The discipline was often "as seemed good to them" (or "after their own pleasure"). This means it could be influenced by personal judgment, moods, or even biases, not always aligning with what was truly best for us.
- Earthly Focus: While parents aimed for our good, their focus was often on preparing us for life in this world. The benefits were primarily temporal.
This isn't to diminish the role of parents, but to contrast their methods and scope with God's perfect, eternal approach.
