It's not just that Moses chose to leave his privileged life; the text highlights he refused to be called the son of Pharaoh's daughter. This wasn't a passive withdrawal, but an active disavowal of that identity, a powerful declaration that his true belonging was with the oppressed people of God.
By faith Moses, when he was grown up, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter, choosing rather to be mistreated with the people of God than to enjoy the fleeting pleasures of sin. He considered the reproach of Christ greater wealth than the treasures of Egypt, for he was looking to the reward. By faith he left Egypt, not being afraid of the anger of the king, for he endured as seeing him who is invisible.
English Standard Version (ESV)
The author of Hebrews is walking through biblical heroes, highlighting their faith. After mentioning the faith of Moses' parents in hiding him as an infant, the text now shifts to Moses himself as an adult, specifically focusing on a pivotal moment where he made a conscious choice to identify with his oppressed people rather than the comforts of Egyptian royalty. This action sets the stage for his later leadership in the Exodus, demonstrating his commitment to God's people over personal gain.
Imagine having the world at your fingertips – power, wealth, a royal lineage. Now imagine willingly walking away from it all. That's exactly what Moses did.
Hebrews highlights that Moses' choice wasn't a childish whim. When he was 'grown up' (around 40 years old, as Acts 7:23 tells us), he actively refused his status as the son of Pharaoh's daughter.
This wasn't just about turning down a title. It was a profound rejection of the Egyptian royal court, its comforts, and its entire way of life. It meant turning his back on immense privilege, power, and a potentially glittering future. This decision, coming in the prime of his life, shows a conscious, deliberate choice made with full understanding.
The world screams 'fortune!' God whispers 'family.' Moses heard the whisper and chose the family.
The passage reveals that Moses' refusal wasn't driven by a desire for less, but by a desire for more – more of God's people and God's purpose.
He chose 'to suffer affliction with the people of God' over 'the pleasures of sin for a season.' This wasn't about enjoying suffering; it was about identifying with God's chosen, even in their hardship. The 'pleasures of sin' represent the temporary, fleeting enjoyments of the Egyptian court, which ultimately lead away from God. By contrast, aligning himself with God's people, however afflicted, was an act of faith in God's promises and His ultimate plan.

What good is a palace if your heart yearns for a promised land? Moses looked beyond the visible to embrace the eternal.
The core of Moses' decision, according to Hebrews, was his perspective – his faith. He 'esteemed the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures in Egypt.'
This means Moses saw something more valuable than all the wealth and status Egypt could offer. He saw the 'reproach of Christ' not as shame, but as a badge of honor connected to God's unfolding plan. The 'treasures of Egypt' were temporary and ultimately empty, while the 'reproach' was tied to God's enduring covenant and the future redemption promised through Christ. He had 'respect unto the recompense of the reward' – he fixed his gaze on the eternal reward God promised, which made earthly riches seem insignificant.
