Ever worked hard, only to see your efforts fizzle out? The people of Haggai's day knew this frustration all too well. What if God Himself was involved?
The prophet Haggai confronts the people of Judah, who have returned from exile but are neglecting to rebuild the Temple.
A Failed Harvest
'You looked for much, and, lo, it came to little.' They expected abundance, but their harvests were meager. This wasn't just bad luck; it was a divine intervention. Haggai states, 'when you brought it home, I blew it away.' This 'blowing' signifies God withholding His blessing, causing their efforts to amount to nothing. It's like a strong wind scattering precious grain – their hard work and resources were simply dispersed.
The Reason Why
God directly asks, 'Why?' He then reveals the cause: 'Because of my house that lies in ruins, while each of you busies himself with his own house.' Their personal endeavors were flourishing, or at least attempted with great zeal, while God's dwelling place lay neglected. God's 'blowing' was a response to their misplaced priorities.
