Ever feel like your priorities are out of whack? The prophet Haggai cuts straight to the heart of the matter, showing how the way we live reveals what truly matters to us.
Haggai confronts the people with a stark question: "Is it a time for you yourselves to dwell in your paneled houses, while this house lies in ruins?"
The Contrast is Sharp
- "Paneled houses" (or "ceiled houses") weren't just ordinary homes. These were homes adorned with expensive wood, like cedar, possibly even salvaged from materials meant for God's temple. They represented comfort, luxury, and self-satisfaction.
- "This house" refers to the Temple of God. After the exile, the foundation had been laid years before, but the people had stopped the work. It lay neglected, unfinished, a shadow of its former glory.
Haggai’s point is clear: the people had ample time, resources, and energy for their own comfort and status, but not for God's dwelling place. Their actions screamed that their own needs and desires were far more important than honoring God.
This isn't just about ancient Israelites. It’s a mirror held up to our own lives. What do our homes, our spending, our schedules say about our priorities?
