We often say 'it's not the right time' for spiritual things. But does God see our comfort as more important than His house?
Haggai confronts the returned exiles with a stark question: 'Is it time for you yourselves to dwell in your paneled houses, while this house lies in ruins?' (Haggai 1:4). This isn't just about building materials; it's about priorities.
A Crushing Rebuke
The prophet uses the contrast between their luxurious homes and the desolate state of God's temple to highlight their misplaced focus. The Hebrew emphasizes 'you yourselves,' pointing to their personal indulgence. They had the resources and time to construct elaborate homes, possibly even using fine cedar wood, yet the house of God, the center of their community and worship, was neglected.
The Deeper Issue
This wasn't merely about a building project. It was about their spiritual state. While they were busy securing their own comfort and status, they were ignoring God's presence and His command to restore His dwelling place. Their actions screamed that their own well-being was paramount, not God's honor.
