Haggai 1:12-15

What does Haggai 1:12-15 mean?

It’s easy to read this as just a summary of obedience, but notice how the text links obeying the words of Haggai directly to obeying the voice of the Lord. This wasn't just taking advice; it was recognizing God speaking through his prophet, which stirred a "fear of the Lord" that led to genuine conversion.

Then Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, and Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, with all the remnant of the people, obeyed the voice of the LORD their God, and the words of Haggai the prophet, as the LORD their God had sent him. And the people feared the LORD. Then Haggai, the messenger of the LORD, spoke to the people with the LORD’s message, “I am with you, declares the LORD.” And the LORD stirred up the spirit of Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and the spirit of Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and the spirit of all the remnant of the people. And they came and worked on the house of the LORD of hosts, their God, on the twenty-fourth day of the month, in the sixth month, in the second year of Darius the king.

English Standard Version (ESV)

What Haggai 1:12-15 means

After the prophet Haggai delivered a stern message about their misplaced priorities, specifically their neglect of rebuilding the Temple while focusing on their own fine homes, the leaders and the people responded. Zerubbabel, the governor, and Joshua, the high priest, along with the rest of the returned exiles, heeded God's voice through Haggai, and a genuine fear of the Lord took root in their hearts. This immediate obedience sets the stage for God's promise of His presence and encouragement in the next part of the message.

Leaders Set the Tone

When God’s people face a call to action, who’s usually the first to step up? This verse points to some key figures. Let’s see why their immediate response mattered so much.

The passage highlights the immediate obedience of Zerubbabel, the civil governor, and Joshua, the high priest. Their prompt response, along with 'all the remnant of the people,' shows a unified leadership that set the example. When those in positions of authority readily obey God's word, it creates a powerful ripple effect, encouraging others to follow.

This wasn't just about following orders; it was about acknowledging the divine authority behind the message. Their willing submission demonstrated that they recognized Haggai as a genuine prophet, commissioned by God.

The 'Remnant' Responds with Fear

The people who returned from exile are called a 'remnant.' What does this term tell us about their situation, and how did their response to God’s word reveal their true spiritual state?

The phrase 'all the remnant of the people' is significant. These were the ones who had returned from the Babylonian captivity, a small fraction of the nation. Their obedience, described as happening 'as the LORD their God had sent him,' wasn’t merely outward compliance.

The verse concludes by stating, 'And the people feared the LORD.' This 'fear' isn't terror or dread, but a profound reverence and awe. It signifies a genuine turning towards God, acknowledging His authority and displeasure with their past neglect of rebuilding the temple. This godly fear was the engine of their renewed obedience.
