Then Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, and Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, with all the remnant of the people, obeyed the voice of the LORD their God, and the words of Haggai the prophet, as the LORD their God had sent him. And the people feared the LORD. Then Haggai, the messenger of the LORD, spoke to the people with the LORD’s message, “I am with you, declares the LORD.” And the LORD stirred up the spirit of Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and the spirit of Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and the spirit of all the remnant of the people. What Haggai 1:12-14 means

Following Haggai's stern message and the explanation of the resulting drought, the people, led by their governor Zerubbabel and High Priest Joshua, finally decide to obey God's command. Leaders Pave the Way for the People

When God calls His people to action, who usually steps up first? And why does their example matter so much?

In Haggai 1:12, the prophet highlights that it wasn't just the 'common people' who responded. Zerubbabel, the governor, and Joshua, the high priest, are mentioned first. This shows a crucial principle: leaders are called to set the example. Their willingness to 'obey the voice of the LORD their God' and 'the words of Haggai' was key to mobilizing the rest of the community. When those in positions of authority embrace God's word and lead with integrity, it creates a powerful momentum for others to follow.

The 'Remnant' Learns to Fear the Lord

The people who returned from exile were called a 'remnant.' What does this tell us about their past, and what does their renewed fear of God signify?

The verse refers to 'all the remnant of the people.' This term isn't just descriptive; it's theological. These were the ones left after God's judgment and the exile, a small fraction of the nation. Their previous disobedience had led to severe consequences. Now, hearing Haggai's message, they 'feared the LORD.' This 'fear' isn't mere terror, but a deep reverence and awe that leads to obedience. It signifies a genuine turning back to God, recognizing His authority and the seriousness of His word after a period of neglect. Their obedience stemming from this fear marks a crucial spiritual reorientation.
